And I Thought All He Knew Was Attaching Unrelated Riders To Security Bills!

Date April 29, 2007

Did you know that Bill Frist is a blogger? He writes blog entries (or is at least credited with their bylines) for VOLPAC, the Volunteer Political Action Committee, which he chairs and co-founded in 1998.

I wonder have to wonder: if enough poker players wrote to him asking him why he handled passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in the manner he chose, would he address the issue on his blog? Would he even write back saying thanks for the letter?

What if we asked him how his expansion of unwieldy federal government power into the homes of individuals who wish to gamble comes close to fitting with VOLPAC’s professed love for politicians who (according to their mission statement) believe in a smarter, more responsive, more effective government, not a bigger one?

Would we get a real response?

Would Frist simply ignore our questions, the way he ignored the fact that he didn’t have any real support for his anti-gambling adventure by turning a serious public policy decision into a political one? Or would he actually take our concerns seriously and respond to our questions with thought?

My guess is there’d be no response. But why guess? As soon as I’m done writing my own letter detailing what the UIGEA has done to my professional life I’ll be in a better position to provide you with facts on the matter. Maybe you’ll be in a better position, too, after you write your own letter about your experiences with the UIGEA.
